Travel Through England's Heritage

The story behind the Defender, the landscape, and the journey.

An icon of British adventure

At the heart of Cotswolds Expeditions is the classic Land Rover Defender — a vehicle known for countryside travel, durability and adventure.

Originally built for practical rural life, the Land Rover became one of Britain’s most recognisable vehicles. Its distinctive shape, capable design and strong connection to the outdoors make it a natural fit for exploring the Cotswolds.

For guests, it is more than just transport. It is part of the experience.

A landscape shaped by centuries

►︎ Prehistoric & Roman Times

The Cotswolds has been inhabited since Neolithic times, with the Romans later shaping the region through the development of villas and the Fosse Way, one of the major Roman roads still running through the area.

►︎ Medieval Wool Trade

Between 1250 and 1350, the region prospered through the wool trade. Wealth from the famous Cotswold Lion sheep helped fund many of the limestone villages and “wool churches” that still define the landscape today.

►︎ English Civil War

During the 1640s, the Cotswolds became strategically important during the English Civil War. This included the famous battle of Stow-on-the-Wold, where Royalist and Parliamentarian forces clashed over the future governance of the country.

►︎ The Industrial Revolution

As industries expanded across the country due to heavy industrialisation, much of the Cotswolds remained relatively untouched, helping to preserve the distinctive character and charm for which the region is still famous for today.
